The Persecution of Christians – Country List and Links
Countries where Christians are routinely persecuted for practicing their faith and/or for converting from the state-sponsored religion are many, and you may be surprised to learn that persecution of Christians is on the rise in the United States.
As a matter of fact the Telegraph recently (29 October, 2012) published the following harrowing statistic: “Christians are targeted in greater numbers than any other faith group on earth. About 200 million church members (10 per cent of the global total) face discrimination or persecution…”
In Uzbekistan, possession of more than one Bible is punishable by imprisonment, torture and bankruptcy and the one Bible allowed is not to be published in any other language than Russian. The official language of Uzbekistan is Uzbek and is spoken by 80% of the population. Younger Uzbekis speak a smattering of English but Russian is spoken sporadically at most and almost exclusively by the elderly.
In Pakistan, apostasy laws prohibit Muslims from religious conversion but allows and encourages the forced conversion to Islam of any non-Muslim. Many Pakistani converts to Christianity are stoned, beaten, beheaded, raped, or imprisoned. According to Jihad Watch, 2,000 non-Muslim girls were forcibly converted to Islam.
India, for example: “Between August and October of 2008, Hindu hardliners in the eastern state of Orissa murdered at least 90 people, displaced 50,000, and attacked 170 churches and chapels. This disaster was not unexceptional. The past four years have seen scores of assaults on churches and congregations in other parts of the country.”
Most of the abuses against Christians are committed by Muslims or Muslim States the world over. The set of laws known as Shari’a imposes harsh penalties. However the Qu’ran itself imposes no terrestrial penalties for apostasy, the punishments have been determined by Imams and Scholars over the years, enacted into law and preached from the Mosque. “In most interpretations of sharia, conversion by Muslims to other religions or becoming non-religious, is strictly forbidden and is termed apostasy.” For those accused of apostasy, death is the punishment and this is meted out on a daily basis.
Persecution does not necessarily result in death, praise God. In Eqypt, lauded by the West for the defeat of Mubarak and the imposition of a new regime, the Hamayouni Decree restricts the building of or repairing of churches. Mosques are exempt.
Most countries on the list below ‘officially’ allow religious freedoms but authorities look the other way as an extension of ‘unofficial’ state policy when the majority abuse the minority and as a matter of course harass Christians on a routine basis.
Lest you think that the abuses of Christians by Catholics is a thing of the past, relegated to mouldering history books like Foxe’s ‘Book of Martyrs’, think again. In Mexico the following: Last fall (2011) Catholics threatened to crucify the Protestants if they didn’t leave town immediately and Christians were under Continued Attacks in Chiapas, Mexico.
Interestingly, even though Catholics are not Christians in the strictest sense of the word, thus they present themselves and are seen as such the world over. Some abuses against Christians are aimed at Catholics and some at Christians by Catholics (see Mexico).
Murder, imprisonment, forced conversion, kidnapping, rape, dismemberment, burning alive, disembowelment, eviction, bankruptcy, forced conversion, honor killing, et cetera of Christians is a routine and daily occurrence in most of the world, and there is no room here for links to them all. You are encouraged to look up abuses in each of these countries for yourself using the links provided and other resources found on the Internet and in Libraries, but for those of you loathe to believe or accept that persecution of Christians can and does occur in the ‘enlightened’ West, links are provided for those respective countries.
