Todd Bentley was born on January 10, 1976 in Gibsons, British Columbia, Canada.
He became a Christian at the age of 18. In 1998 Bentley took over the leadership of the Fresh Fire Ministry and began traveling throughout South America, India and Africa, participating in various revivals.
The following are excerpts from a sermon called ‘The Shack and the False Prophet Todd Bentley‘, by C. Matthew Recker at Heritage Baptist Church.
Bentley claims the Lord tells him to pound people in the stomach and brags that they vomit up cancer.
Neither Jesus nor the apostles ever hit anyone to heal them. Jesus was meek and lowly of heart and only healed with words and sometimes with touches of compassionate gentleness (Mark 1:41; Luke 13:12).
Bentley boasts that Jesus speaks audibly to him and even told him to lie that he had a demonic spirit while attending a Catholic charismatic meeting. – (youtube.com/watch?v=HtSK9TyduR4)
Jesus is truth and speaks only truth and His true servants speak the truth in love (John 14:6; Ephesians 4:15). We do not win people to Christ nor experience revival through lies.
The Jesus of Todd Bentley only cares about “healing and signs and wonders.” – (youtube.com/watch?v=uwEW8gtxVS0&NR=1)
Jesus tells us that “an evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign” and he rebukes those who will not believe except they “see signs and wonders” (Matthew 12:39; John 4:48).
Bentley shouts BAM, BAM over and over as he supposedly releases “the angels of revival and of breakthrough.” – (youtube.com/watch?v=7Bup1HxKl-s&feature=related)
God’s people pray to God for revival as in Psalm 85:4-7. Turn us, O God of our salvation…wilt thou not revive us again…show us thy mercy, O LORD, and grant us thy salvation.” God brings revival, not angels!
Bentley believes in a prophetic angel named Emma. He prays to this angel when he needs a financial breakthrough. He can be seen shouting over and over “ANGEL, ANGEL!” – (youtube.com/watch?v=nIUOwfBEYfk)
Below, in Bentley’s own words, we learn how he met with the demonic spirit that he passes off as ‘Emma’, an angel, and how a church gifted him with a tremendous financial offering as a result of this ‘angelic’ visitation:
Quote: “Now let me talk about an angelic experience with Emma. Twice Bob Jones asked me about this angel that was in Kansas City in 1980: “Todd, have you ever seen the angel by the name of Emma?” He asked me as if he expected that this angel was appearing to me. Surprised, I said, “Bob, who is Emma?” He told me that Emma was the angel that helped birth and start the whole prophetic movement in Kansas City in the 1980s. She was a mothering-type angel that helped nurture the prophetic as it broke out. Within a few weeks of Bob asking me about Emma, I was in a service in Beulah, North Dakota. In the middle of the service I was in conversation with Ivan and another person when in walks Emma. As I stared at the angel with open eyes, the Lord said, “Here’s Emma.” I’m not kidding. She floated a couple of inches off the floor. It was almost like Kathryn Khulman in those old videos when she wore a white dress and looked like she was gliding across the platform. Emma appeared beautiful and young-about 22 years old-but she was old at the same time. She seemed to carry the wisdom, virtue and grace of Proverbs 31 on her life.
She glided into the room, emitting brilliant light and colors. Emma carried these bags and began pulling gold out of them. Then, as she walked up and down the aisles of the church, she began putting gold dust on people. “God, what is happening?” I asked. The Lord answered: “She is releasing the gold, which is both the revelation and the financial breakthrough that I am bringing into this church. I want you to prophecy that Emma showed up in this service-the same angel that appeared in Kansas city-as a sign that I am endorsing and releasing a prophetic spirit in the church.” See, when angels come, they always come for a reason; we need to actually ask God what the purpose is. Within three weeks of that visitation, the church had given me the biggest offering I had ever received to that point in my ministry. Thousands of dollars! Thousands! Even though the entire community consisted of only three thousand people, weeks after I left the church the pastor testified that the church offerings had either doubled or tripled. – prophecynews.co.uk/content/view/871/
A cursory search of Bentley in action reveals his ‘healing’ techniques (the following are from the article Pastor Todd Bentley sticks the boot in to heal sick‘, heraldsun.com.au, News Corp Australia Network August 06, 2012):
“And I’m thinking God why is not the power of God moving. He said “It’s because you haven’t kicked that woman in the face.” And there’s this older lady worshiping right in front of the platform [Bentley holds up hands as if worshiping. Crowd laughs]. And the Holy Spirit spoke to me, the gift of faith came on me, He said “Kick her in the face – with your biker boot! [Bentley holds up leg and foot for crowd, he is wearing a biker boot. Crowd laughing hysterically.] I inched closer and I went like this [he kicks out forcefully and screams] – Bam! And just as my boot made contact with her nose, she fell under the power of God.”
“And I saw Him and the gift of faith came on me and I said, “What do I do God?” God told me to just – “run em’ down!” So I jumped up in the air and I went – BAM! and I hit em’ to the ground, jumped on to him, and got him in a full mount, and something came over me, and instead of punching him I grabbed him by the neck and started choking him [yelling and making motion as if he is choking someone] and I said, [now screaming] “Come out of him devil, come out of him devil…”
I have diligently searched the scriptures for every instance of healing I could find. The only times physical contact occurred, it was a gentle touch. Not once was anyone violently assaulted in the name of healing.
Bentley is also a proponent of ‘holy’ laughter, ‘holy’ shaking, and perversions of the teaching ministries of Jesus and Paul; “I’m going to make a statement that you might not believe; you might even find it offensive. Fortunately, its not just my opinion; I got it from the apostle Paul who picked it up from Jesus—so don’t get upset with me! Here it is: You haven’t fully preached the Gospel of Christ if you haven’t done it with miracles, signs, and wonders.” Todd Bentley, ‘The Reality of the Supernatural World‘, Destiny Image, Inc. p. 71, June 2008.
More from Bentley:
“The woman was standing in the back of the room when the faith of God hit the meeting, and her tumor exploded out of her right leg, slid down her leg onto the floor!”
“God said, ‘…I want you to grab that lady’s crippled legs and bang them up-and-down on the platform like a baseball bat.’ (loud laughter) …I grabbed her legs, and I started going, BAM! BAM! …banging them…. She got healed!”
“And there is this older lady worshiping right in front of the platform. And the Holy Spirit spoke to me; the gift of faith came on me. He said, ‘Kick her in the face with your biker-boot’…I went like this (kicks and shouts) BAM! And just as my boot made contact with her nose, she fell under the power of God.”
“During a visitation, the pastor’s wife got totally whacked by the Holy Ghost. She began running around barking like a dog or squawking like a chicken as a powerful prophetic spirit came on her.”
Eyewitness reports from these services are chilling (Todd Bentley and the Lakeland Revival, todd-bentley-lakeland.blogspot.com) :
“The crowds following Bentley are seen being overcome by ugly spirits of drunkenness and stupor. It reflects the faulty theology of those in ‘The River’ movement popularized by the so-called ‘Toronto Blessing.’ Song lyrics reflect Kingdom-Now visions of the church taking over all the elements of society and setting up a kingdom on earth before the Lord returns – which the Bible contradicts.” Jacob Prasch
“People have their eyes rolled back in the back of their heads. There are reports of women gyrating and pulsating like they’ve been ravaged from behind by some unseen force. To those who are knowledgeable of the previous ‘revivals’ and the power of the occult, the jury is in. The source is not the God of the Bible.” Mike Oppenheimer
Bentley also believes that he has a direct line to God and has conversations with Him regularly. Bentley’s god puts an emphasis on people believing in an angel and that they need signs and wonders to help them in their faith: “You know I told the Lord, “Why can’t I just move in healing and forget talking about all that other stuff.” He said: ” Because, Todd, you’ve got to get the people to believe in the angel”. I said, “Why do I want people to believe in the angel. Isn’t it about the people believing in Jesus?” He said, “The people already believe in Jesus but the church doesn’t believe in the supernatural.” Todd Bentley – “Told by God” to preach angels not Jesus’, youtube.com
The angel Bentley is preaching is Emma-O, previously mentioned as the angel appearing in Kansas City in 1980 and in Beulah, North Dakota to Bentley. Emma-O is a satanic manifestation masquerading as an angel of light. Bentley had described Emma as a male and a female manifestation and most recently as a gender neutral ‘special angel’. Bentley in his own words: “She floated a couple of inches off the floor. It was almost like Kathryn Khulman in those old videos when she wore a white dress and looked like she was gliding across the platform. Emma appeared beautiful and young-about 22 years old-but she was old at the same time. She seemed to carry the wisdom, virtue and grace of Proverbs 31 on her life.”
Bentley refers to one of the original Kansas City ‘prophets’, Bob Jones, as the source of his understanding of Emma and who s/he is. Bentley is quoted: “Now let me talk about an angelic experience with Emma. Twice Bob Jones asked me about this angel that was in Kansas City in 1980: “Todd, have you ever seen the angel by the name of Emma?” He asked me as if he expected that this angel was appearing to me. Bentley’s marriage, to first wife Shonnah, began to fall apart soon after his Lakeland Revival meetings began. Prior to becoming divorced, Bentley was involved in a relationship with a ministry employee named Jessa. In her own words, Jessa admits the adulterous nature of their relationship; “Even though Todd was getting a divorce and Todd was already separated, it was still wrong for us to have anything romantic, regardless if anything physical happened or not,” Jessa Bentley said. “Even that emotional line that we crossed, I think is wrong. I think it was a sin. I think it was a mistake. I think we missed it.”, Todd Bentley’s New Wife Breaks Silence, Adrienne S. Gaines, CharismaMag.com, October 15, 2009.
Shonnah Bentley has suffered from bone cancer and had her left knee removed when she was 16. So Todd Bentley claims to have raised 31 people from the dead and he was unable to cure his wife’s disability?
According to the scriptures that Bentley claims to believe, that he was involved in a relationship with another woman before his divorce was final, and because his divorce was not due to his wife’s infidelity, that makes him an adulterer and his remarriage makes his new wife and adulteress and also puts Shonnah in the position of committing adultery. Quite a track record for a man of God.
Matthew 5:32 But I say unto you, That whosoever shall put away his wife, saving for the cause of fornication, causeth her to commit adultery: and whosoever shall marry her that is divorced committeth adultery.
Matthew 19:9 And I say unto you, Whosoever shall put away his wife, except it be for fornication, and shall marry another, committeth adultery: and whoso marrieth her which is put away doth commit adultery.
Bentley has had no verifiable prophecies, which makes him a false prophet.
Deuteronomy 18:22 “If what a prophet proclaims in the name of the Lord does not take place or come true, that is a message the Lord has not spoken. That prophet has spoken presumptuously. Do not be afraid of him”
Jeremiah 28:9 “But the prophet who prophesies peace will be recognized as one truly sent by the Lord only if his prediction comes true”
Please pray for Todd Bentley, that he will come to true repentance and ask for forgiveness for his sins before it is too late.
