Sid Roth, born May 30, 1936, is a leading light of the messianic roots movement.
Sid began as an executive at Merrill Lynch. In 1972 he had a personal crisis that began with leaving his wife and child and engaging in a search for answers to life’s questions via a trip through the New Age wonderland and culminating in a conversion to Christianity. He eventually reconciled to his family.
In 1977 he launched his radio ministry, ‘Messianic Vision’. His outreach has grown immeasurably since then. His television program, ‘It’s Supernatural’, was begun in 1996, and is based in Georgia.
Roth is quoted in his newsletter, the Mishpochah, as equating the promise of God to bless those who bless Israel with the prosperity gospel. Send him money and you will avoid the economic collapse effecting the world. (this is from 2009):
Dear Mishpochah. I am bursting with expectancy for 2009! This will be our greatest year of Jewish soulwinning in history. When the ancient Jewish spiritual DNA merges with the New Covenant Gentile spiritual DNA, it will explode with “life from the dead” resurrection power as One New Man (Eph. 2:14-16). The devil is trembling and about to have a nervous breakdown over the emergence of the One New Man. Speaking of a nervous breakdown, God is not nervous about the economy. He is ready to pour out financial blessings to capture this great Jewish harvest based on Genesis 12:3. God promises to bless those who bless the Jewish people. The greatest blessing for the Jewish people is not aliyah (returning to Israel) or humanitarian aid, but salvation. “He who wins souls is wise” (Prov. 11:30). Thank you for partnering with us for the greatest Jewish harvest in history! Shalom and Love, Sid Roth. Donate Now (link). Mishpochaah Newsletter, March 29th, 2009.
TBN, it’s upstart sibling, DayStar, and The Discovery Channel broadcast this mishmash of nonsensical messianic gibberish.
In 2013, Roth launched the ‘It’s Supernatural’ Network, ISN. ISN is home to a 24-hour internet streaming schedule populated by heretics, charismatics, boosters of the new apostolic reformation, prosperity preachers, name-it and claim-it gospel promoters and other assorted false prophets and teachers.
Roth’s website (sidroth.org) is a mirror of his television show, ‘It’s Supernatural’. The first page is a slideshow of his friends, including Benny Hinn and Rick Joyner. His ‘Store’ page includes books by Marilyn Hickey and Benny Hinn as well as such items integral to spreading the gospel as a cook’s apron and commuter cups that say ‘Crazy for Jesus’. There is even a DVD on ‘How to be Normal’, and books by Perry Stone on Bible codes and apocalyptic revelations.
Roth is a proponent of the Messianic Roots movement and a supporter of Christian mysticism. He promotes people who claim to speak directly to God, have personally visited heaven, have the ‘gift’ of healing, and divine, extrabiblical revelation. As a matter of fact, Sid ascribes nearly all supernatural manifestations as emanating from God, hence his close affiliation for and promotion of the likes of: false prophet and faith healer Benny Hinn; numerologist necromancer Perry Stone; blab-it and grab-it carney Marilyn Hickey; faith healer Kathleen Kuhlman (who died from open heart surgery); Holy Ghost bartender and ‘holy’ laughter mystic Rodney Howard Browne; and new ager, false prophet Rick Joyner, among others
Roth, in the vein of Simon Magus, offers to impart the gifts of the Spirit for a fee. His website contains a CD called ‘How to Be Naturally Supernatural’ by David Martin. “David Martin shares a supernatural impartation and powerful keys from God to do the same works that Jesus did! Just listen and receive.”
“Just listen and receive”. “You can do the SAME works that Jesus did”. Pardon me while I move aside out of the line of fire of that lightning bolt I anticipate to hit my laptop any minute now.
Sideshow carney Sid Roth doesn’t stop at peddling such utter nonsense, he indicts himself by his own words:
In an enthusiastic sales pitch for the book ‘A Rabbi Looks At The Last Days!’, by Messianic Rabbi Jonathan Bernis, Roth says: “Most end-time Bible teachers forecast a future of DOOM and GLOOM! But this book declares that God’s best is yet to come — a time of supernatural healing, deliverance, miracles and Signs and Wonders!”
So here we have a direct refutation of the words of Christ Himself when He said of the last days, Matthew 24:21 “For then there will be great distress, unequaled from the beginning of the world until now-and never to be equaled again. 22 If those days had not been cut short, no one would survive, but for the sake of the elect those days will be shortened. 23 At that time if anyone says to you, ‘Look, here is the Christ!’ or, ‘There he is!’ do not believe it. 24 For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect-if that were possible.” Matthew 24:29 “Immediately after the distress of those days ” ‘the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light; the stars will fall from the sky, and the heavenly bodies will be shaken.’ 30 “At that time the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky, and all the nations of the earth will mourn. They will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky, with power and great glory.”
SID: Hello. Sid Roth here with Janie DuVall, and we’re talking about supernatural languages. I believe that God wants to restore this gift for the last great push of God’s spirit. As I study the great men and women of God throughout history one ingredient is left out, but it’s in the record, Janie, and that is they all have spoke in supernatural languages. (Sid Roth with Janie DuVall, It’s Supernatural, November 29 – December 5, 2010)
I have searched the scriptures and have yet to find ‘supernatural languages’ as an impartation of the Holy Spirit. I also have yet to see any prophecy ascribed to any author of the Bible that indicates that God will or “wants to restore this gift for the last great push of God’s spirit”. One does read about the day of Pentecost and the Apostles preaching to the masses in Jerusalem, each in his own tongue, understood by all.
Acts 2:4 “And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. 5 And there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, devout men, out of every nation under heaven. 6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. 7 And they were all amazed and marvelled, saying one to another, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilaeans? 8 And how hear we every man in our own tongue, wherein we were born? 9 Parthians, and Medes, and Elamites, and the dwellers in Mesopotamia, and in Judaea, and Cappadocia, in Pontus, and Asia, 10 Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes, 11 Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. 12 And they were all amazed, and were in doubt, saying one to another, What meaneth this? 13 Others mocking said, These men are full of new wine. 14 But Peter, standing up with the eleven, lifted up his voice, and said unto them, Ye men of Judaea, and all ye that dwell at Jerusalem, be this known unto you, and hearken to my words: 15 For these are not drunken, as ye suppose, seeing it is but the third hour of the day.”
So, nothing about ‘supernatural’ languages. Nothing about incomprehensible glossolalia. Just the ability to speak in human language not their own, and Dr. Luke gives us a list of the languages they spoke.
But Roth doesn’t stop at promoting the babbling of tongues, he is a master salesman. He promotes a prosperity doctrine so disguised in evangelism that it beggars disbelief. Roth publishes a newsletter called the Mishpochah. He offers free six-month subscriptions on his website. Here is a direct quote: “…no matter what happens to America, people who sow into the salvation of Jewish people will be extravagantly blessed. In the midst of judgment, watch God supernaturally protect you, your family, your income and health” (Mishpochah Newsletter). The seed-faith keyword ‘sow’ is prominently used here in a not-so-subtle plea for ‘donations’ from those Christians who believe that Roth’s ministry is interested in converting Jews and not about promoting his entertainment empire.
“Jesus not only promised us we would do the same works as Him, but that we would do even greater works (John 14:12).”
“The days are coming quickly that my friend Kathryn Kuhlman prophesied about. She said hospitals would be cleared out because of the anointing. Everyone will be healed.”
“I believe the population of entire cities will become on-fire believers in Messiah Jesus.”
“The beginning of this revival will start this year.”
Mishpochah, Number 1501 January, 2015.
Unfortunately for false prophet Sid, Jesus promised a great falling away, not a great revival. 2 Thessalonians 2:3 “Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition.”
As previously stated, it is not the business of this writer to question a person’s heart, only their actions, the ‘fruits’ of their professed faith. Having said that, Sid Roth may very well be born again and just on a path of confusion and self-deception, if so, he can join the ranks of many saved brothers and sisters who need a spiritual awakening. However, the fallacies and heresies with which he peppers his ministry and the promoters of dark lies and deceptions with whom he allies himself (and to whom he gives airtime) are a reflection of his spirit. He should turn from these workers of iniquity and hopefully use his bully pulpit in the furtherance of the true gospel, the Good News of the Resurrection and Salvation offered by that highest of high priests, Jesus Christ, the Messiah that came from the bosom of his people as the Source of Eternal Life and now sits at the right hand of God.
