False Prophets, False Teachers – Introduction to Series
This is the introduction to the series on False Prophets, False Teachers. This is not meant to be a comprehensive expose, merely to give you, the reader, an outline by which to exercise discernment and give you enough to go on a path of discovery for yourself.
In the true Berean tradition, search the scriptures and compare everything you hear and read with the truth of the Word of God.
Deuteronomy 18:22; ‘When a prophet speaks in the name of the LORD, if the word does not come to pass or come true, that is a word which the LORD has not spoken’.
Matthew 7:15 ‘Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.’
1 Timothy 4:1 ‘some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons.’
Romans 16:17 ‘Keep your eye on those who cause dissensions & hindrances (Greek = “occasions of stumbling”) contrary to the teaching, and turn away from them.’
“I am surrounded by priests who repeat incessantly that their kingdom is not of this world, and yet they lay their hands on everything they can get.” – Napoleon Bonaparte
Deuteronomy 18: 20 ‘But the prophet, which shall presume to speak a word in my name, which I have not commanded him to speak, or that shall speak in the name of other gods, even that prophet shall die.
21 And if thou say in thine heart, How shall we know the word which the LORD hath not spoken?
22 When a prophet speaketh in the name of the LORD, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the LORD hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.’
May the Grace of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, be with you now and forever.
The subject of this column, False Prophets, False Teachers, is a companion to the previously posted False Doctrine. Here we will examine those who profess the doctrines exposed in the earlier article. We will name names and illustrate not only who is false but why.
Making money and increasing one’s name recognition is the goal of these hucksters, but all too often the end result is confusion, apostasy and a fallen soul who, God-Willing, will see the truth in time.
2 Chronicles 19:2 ‘And Jehu the son of Hanani the seer went out to meet him, and said to king Jehoshaphat, Shouldest thou help the ungodly, and love them that hate the Lord?
therefore is wrath upon thee from before the Lord.’
For each entry, you will see not only what heresy they are charged with, but a short listing of offenses. Please go to the bottom of this page for a complete listing of source websites or, better yet, do a web search of your own. Remember, once you are armed with the truth, the burden then is upon you whether or not you apply it.
Galatians 1:9 ‘As we said before, so say I now again, If any man preach any other gospel unto you than that ye have received, let him be accursed.’
1 Corinthians 5:11 ‘But now I have written unto you not to keep company, if any man that is called a brother be a fornicator, or covetous, or an idolater, or a railer, or a drunkard, or an extortioner; with such an one no not to eat.
12 For what have I to do to judge them also that are without? do not ye judge them that are within?
13 But them that are without God judgeth. Therefore put away from among yourselves that wicked person.‘
So all who call themselves ‘Christian’ (especially those who would deign to teach or preach the Word of God) are subject to the judgement of their Brothers in Christ, for by their fruits so shall ye know them, but once properly judged and if they prove to be unrepentant (have not changed their minds) and have not earnestly sought forgiveness of God and their Bretheren, cast them out of the congregation of the Body of Christ and leave them to the mercy of Almighty God.
Harsh? Yes. Welcome to the lot of a true Christian, the least popular person in any group.
As Paul expresses in 1 Timothy, there are character traits specific to the offices of the Body of Christ. People who claim to teach others the Word of God are held to a high and strict standard:
1 Timothy 3:1 ‘This is a true saying, If a man desire the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work.
2 A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, apt to teach;
3 Not given to wine, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre; but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;
4 One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity;
5 (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
6 Not a novice, lest being lifted up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.
7 Moreover he must have a good report of them which are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.
8 Likewise must the deacons be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy lucre;
9 Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.
10 And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless.
11 Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.
12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.
13 For they that have used the office of a deacon well purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.
14 These things write I unto thee, hoping to come unto thee shortly:
15 But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.
16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.’
And as the Apostle said so succinctly; 2 John 1:9 ‘Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son.
10 If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
11 For he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.’
May the One True God, King of the Universe and His Only Begotten, the Saviour of Mankind, have mercy on their souls as they stand before the Great White Throne Judgement and fulfill the words of Christ in Matthew 7:22 ‘Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?
23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.’
Some additional verses from The Holy Bible that should be studied and prayed over by every Christian are:
Hebrews 12:6 ‘For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, and scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.
7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is he whom the father chasteneth not?
8 But if ye be without chastisement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.‘
James 1:26 ‘If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.
27 Pure religion and undefiled before God and the Father is this, To visit the fatherless and widows in their affliction, and to keep himself unspotted from the world.‘
James 4:4 ‘Ye adulterers and adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.
5 Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?
6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore he saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble.
7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
8 Draw nigh to God, and he will draw nigh to you. Cleanse your hands, ye sinners; and purify your hearts, ye double minded.
9 Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.
10 Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.‘
Matthew 24:4 ‘See to it that no one misleads you.’
Ezekiel 22:26 ‘Her priests have violated my law, and have profaned mine holy things: they have put no difference between the holy and profane, neither have they shewed difference between the unclean and the clean, and have hid their eyes from my sabbaths, and I am profaned among them.
27 Her princes in the midst thereof are like wolves ravening the prey, to shed blood, and to destroy souls, to get dishonest gain.
28 And her prophets have daubed them with untempered morter, seeing vanity, and divining lies unto them, saying, Thus saith the Lord GOD, when the LORD hath not spoken.
29 The people of the land have used oppression, and exercised robbery, and have vexed the poor and needy: yea, they have oppressed the stranger wrongfully.‘
